Who was the first person to build a city? Cain.
12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond [wanderer] shalt thou be in the earth.
17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he built a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch [not the Enoch from Seth].
How do we describe Cain? First, a murderer. The first person to build a city was a murderer. Second, after God said to Cain that he would be a vagabond (wanderer), Cain built a city saying to God: No I am not going to be a vagabond (wanderer) because I have “settled” in the city. Third, a man fleeing from God.
Cain was seeking security outside of God’s will. And also, Cain named the city, instead of God. He could not bare the fact that God was the solution to his problems.
Those who walk in the way of Cain do not want help from God. They believe they can handle anything. They do not need God’s protection, wisdom and covering. Instead they go out and pursue their own happiness, future and destiny apart from God. This is vanity.
THE CITY IS A GREAT DECEIVER. IT MAKES US FORGET THAT WE ARE ALONE (WITHOUT GOD).
